A major outage hit Microsoft Outlook and other Microsoft 365 services on Thursday, May 15, 2025, leaving millions of users around the globe unable to access their email, calendars, and other essential productivity tools.

The disruption began in the evening IST, with users quickly taking to social media and outage-tracking platforms to report widespread connectivity issues.

Microsoft acknowledged the problem through its official channels, stating, “We’ve identified an issue where users may be unable to access some Microsoft sites.

We’re rolling out a fix to mitigate the impact.” The company directed affected users to follow updates on its Office Service Status portal and provided alternative links for accessing Microsoft 365 and Outlook services while the fix was being implemented.

Microsoft Outlook Outage

The outage was not limited to Outlook alone. Other Microsoft 365 services, including Teams, Excel, PowerPoint, and even the Microsoft Store, were also affected, causing disruptions for businesses and individuals alike.

According to outage monitoring sites such as Downdetector, tens of thousands of users in the United States alone reported issues, with millions impacted globally.

Most complaints centered around server connection failures, login problems, and an inability to send or receive emails.

The incident was particularly disruptive for organizations relying on Microsoft 365 for daily operations, with many users locked out of their accounts during critical business hours.

The timing of the outage, coinciding with the end of the financial year in some regions, exacerbated the impact on business communications.

The outage triggered a wave of frustration among users, many of whom questioned the reliability of Microsoft’s service status pages, which initially failed to reflect the ongoing problems.
